Goddess of learning, knowledge and wisdom, Saraswati endows human beings with power of speech, wisdom and learning. The Sanskrit word sara means "essence" and swa means "self." Thus Saraswati means "the essence of the self."
Goddess Saraswati is depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in pure white saree, seated on a white lotus and uses white swan as her vehicle, since the colour symbolizes purity, discrimination for true knowledge, insight and wisdom. Goddess Saraswati is generally depicted with four arms representing four aspect of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness and ego.
She has sacred scriptures in one hand and a lotus – the symbol of true knowledge – in the second. With her other two hands she plays the music of love and life on a string instrument called the Veena. Goddess Saraswati is worshiped by all persons interested in knowledge, especially students, teachers, scholars, and scientists.
Maa Saraswati is also known as Brahmani, Brahmi, sharda, Veenapani, Vidyadayini, Vani and Vachi. Mata Saraswati’s b’day is celebrated on ‘Vasant panchami’ every year on the 5th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha.
